Een zekeringkast heeft een reeks verschillende zekeringen, relais en diodes om de elektrische circuits te beschermen tegen overbelasting of kortsluiting. De zekeringkast wordt rechtstreeks gevoed door de accu. De draden van de zekeringkast worden aangesloten op de auto-onderdelen die bescherming nodig hebben. Zekeringen zijn de zwakste schakel in een elektrisch systeem. Alle andere draden en onderdelen van het elektrische systeem zijn robuuster dan de zekeringelementen in zekeringen. In plaats daarvan, als er genoeg stroom of temperatuur is om de rest van het systeem te bedreigen, raken de zekeringen in de zekeringkast als eerste beschadigd.
